Two Graduate Research Assistant positions leading to the Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering are open in the spring Semester 2015 in the Computational Mechanics Group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alabama, USA.

The first research project focuses on hydrodynamic, kinetic, and molecular dynamics modelling of laser-material interactions. It implies the development of multi-scale and multi-physics computational models for simulations of laser-induced processes in bulk metal targets, films, and nanoparticles surrounded by a liquid.

The second research project focuses on mesoscopic and atomistic simulations of mechanical and thermal and electrical transport processes in carbon nanotube (CNT) materials and CNT-based nanocomposites.

Both projects imply design of new computational models, development of computational tools, and intensive high-performance parallel simulations. The members of the Computational Mechanics Group have access to a number of computational resources provided by the University of Alabama, Alabama Supercomputer Center, and NSF XSEDE.

Strong commitment to the productive research-oriented work in the field of mechanical engineering/engineering physics is required for both projects. Solid background in mechanics, including continuum mechanics and gas dynamics, is essential for successful applicants. Skills in the computational mechanics, numerical methods, programming (C++, Fortran), and high performance computing (MPI, GPU) are also desired.

The Computational Mechanics Group (http://bama.ua.edu/~avolkov1/index.html) is headed by Dr. Alexey Volkov who joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Fall 2013.

If you are interested in joining the Computational Mechanics Group as a Ph.D. student you are welcome to contact Alexey Volkov (avolkov1@ua.edu). Details of the admission process and requirements can be found at the web site of the Graduate School at the University of Alabama (http://graduate.ua.edu/).
